True Celiac Disease is gene dependant, you either have the celiac gene or do not. However, the gene may not be switched on, i.e. it does not have a recognisable impact on your health. That said your body is very good at compensating for these possible issues and you may not notice that there is a problem.
Digestion
The classical symptom of celiac disease is a bloated stomach, like those children in Africa who are starving. Basically the gluten in the grains eaten by a celiac attack the villi of the gut and tear them off. This then reduces the intestinal area and greatly reduces the amount of food that can be absorbed and basically causes starvation. For many other sufferers their body just copes with the reduced area, so starvation is not an issue but they become nutrient depleat and can suffer a wide range of problems from that depletion.
Infertility
Celiac disease has been linked with both male and female infertility. The mechanisms involved are not really understood especially in the male. Women with celiac can gett pregnant but have a greater risk of miscarriage. Of course I am talking about people who have the disease and are still eating gluten grains. Removing wheat and gluten from the diet increases the fertility rate back to a normal level. However, removing gluten does not act immediately, it may take several months if not longer to get back to optimal health. The other issue we have discovered is that women especially must not revert to a normal gluten diet once pregnant has been achieved, as they are much more likely to induce a miscarriage
Thyroid
Celiac disease has been linked to both hypothyroidism (under active) and hyperthyroidism (over active). The mechanism is not understood appart from the fact that they are both auto immune disorders. Again removing gluten from the diet can help with these issues.
Depression
Any illness or chronic condition can in itself cause depression. It is always difficult to seperate if there are two distinct issues or if they are related due to the effects of the one condition. `it has been shown that deficiencies in some vitamins and minerals can cause irritablility and forgetfulness (folic acid). Hence the celiac disease is triggering these nutritional deficiencies by reducing the bodies ability to absorb these nutrients. Removing gluten from the diet may have a real effect.
Conclusion
If you believe that you may have an issue with gluten and/or wheat then try a gluten free diet for a period of at least two months. You may not have the celiac disease gene but you may still have an intollerance to gluten or wheat. The implication is that maintaining a gluten free diet will have the same impact on improving your health.
